WILLIAMS, Ariz. — Steam-powered passenger trains are set to return to the Grand Canyon Railway on eight dates beginning in April 2021, with one of the railroad’s two steam locomotives powering a morning train from Williams to the Historic Village inside Grand Canyon National Park.
Steam operations are scheduled for the first Saturday of each month — April 3, May 1, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7 and Sept. 4 — plus April 24, Earth Day, and Sept. 18, the 120th anniversary of Grand Canyon Railway. These trains will feature 2-8-2 No. 4960, built by Baldwin for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in 1923 and converted to operate on recycled vegetable oil.
The steam locomotive is scheduled to operate on the 9:30 a.m. train each day. Tickets are priced the same as other Grand Canyon trains with diesel locomotives.
