Passengers line up for a Northeast Regional train at Washington Union Station on Nov. 12

WASHINGTON — Beginning Friday morning, Nov. 24, Amtrak will be discounting coach fares “up to 30 percent on select trains nationwide,” Amtrak representative Marc Magliari says.

The sale runs from “Black Friday” through “Cyber Monday,” Nov. 27 and is good for travel commencing between Dec. 11, 2017, and March 25, 2018, but of course “restrictions apply” and there are blackout dates, presumably around holidays and long weekends. Amtrak ran the sale in 2016 for the first time.

Like all promotional fares, these are yield managed, so when certain benchmarks are hit, the price goes up.

“We expect tickets to go fast,” Magliari says.

Amtrak does offer 30 percent discounts all the time through the “smart fares” portion of its website, but the booking process is cumbersome. These fares are sold Tuesday through Friday for travel Saturday of that week and Monday to Thursday and Saturday of the two following weeks only on certain trains that the site chooses to display.

To take advantage of these fares, you have to know the train number and its schedule, and you aren’t able to see the fare until you complete logging in.
