CHARLESTON, S.C. — Ports in South Carolina handled a record number of intermodal containers in 2016. According to the South Carolina Ports Authority, its facilities handled just shy of 2 million 20-foot equivalent intermodal units in 2016, surpassing 2005’s record of 1.985 million units.

Throughout the year, container volume was up more than 1 percent compared to 2015, while TEU volume was up 4 percent year-over-year. The authority reports that empty container volume was down approximately 10 percent for 2016.

The authority operates port facilities in Charleston, Georgetown and Greer. CSX and Norfolk Southern provide double-stack intermodal service to the Port of Charleston.
