ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Alaska Railroad awarded its “Catch the Train” 2017 calendar photo contest winner to a New Jersey man.

Michael Sullivan of North Arlington, N.J., will receive $1,500 and four round trip tickets for travel on the railroad. His photo made the cover of the Alaska Railroad 2016-2017 calendar.

“This year's trip to Alaska was a supplemental trip to last year to make sure we could see what we missed out on the year before…” Sullivan tells Trains News Wire.

In describing how he captured the winning photograph, Sullivan says he was waist deep in water in the middle of a permafrost bog contaminated with thousands of spiders; one of the spiders bit him on the foot while waiting for the train.

Sullivan says he enjoys the genuine friendliness of the rail workers at the Alaska Railroad, noting that the vast unspoiled scenery compliments the railroad’s blue-and-yellow paint scheme.

It is Sullivan’s second time winning the photo contest.
