Norfolk Southern orders additional PR43Cs

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. — Norfolk Southern has ordered four PR43C medium-duty locomotives from Caterpillar subsidiary Progress Rail Services. The order will bring NS’s fleet of PR43C units to six [see “Locomotive,” TRAINS, November 2009].

NS and Progress began working together in 2008 to develop the design. NS tested the operation of the two prototype units in service on its system. The locomotives feature two engine-generator sets, with one generating 3,600 hp and the other 700 hp. When the engine is idling or pulling light loads, the smaller generator set does all the work and the big set shuts down, saving fuel. The big set only fires up when the engine is working hard enough to need it.

“The PR43C’s performance is optimized for the current duty cycle and operational needs of the railroads,” said Ken Hofacker, senior vice president of locomotive development at Progress. “Our concept of large and small diesel engines working intelligently together maximizes fuel savings while minimizing emissions and lowering life-cycle costs.”
