NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Hocking Valley Scenic Railway will run its first steam excursions of the season this weekend.

The trips on the southeast Ohio tourist railroad will be May 18-19 behind Hocking Valley Scenic’s No. 3, a coal-fired 0-6-0 built by Baldwin in 1920. The railroad says it is Ohio’s only regularly scheduled standard gauge steam locomotive.

The excursions are scheduled to depart at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. both days. Hocking Valley Vice President of Mechanical Operations Dan Sudlow recommends purchasing tickets ahead of time in case the train sells out, but any remaining tickets will be available over the counter. Tickets and additional information can be found here on the railroad’s website. More information and tickets can be found under "Pre-Season Steam" on the railroad’s website.

No. 3 was built for a power plant and was in service until the late 1960s. It was moved to a park in Cumberland, Ohio, for display. It was donated to the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in 1982. Restoration began in 2001 and was completed in 2015.

Sudlow said more steam runs will be added throughout the year. Updates are available on the railroad’s Facebook page.
