NEW RICHMOND, Quebec — VIA Rail Canada has selected Rail GD to refurbish four dining cars for use on its transcontinental train, the Canadian.

The $16.4 million (Canadian) contract, for work to be completed by the second quarter of 2020, will include installation of a new kitchen, replacement of electronic and electrical components, mechanical upgrades, and installation of equipment to make the cars wi-fi ready.

“Today's announcement will allow us to offer our customers an enhanced service in a completely renovated diner car,” VIA Rail President and CEO Yves Desjardins-Siciliano said in a press release. “They will be able to savor the best Canadian cuisine while the train winds its way through the most scenic landscapes. The new kitchen will also allow our on-board chefs to prepare world-class meals in a state-of-the-art facility."

It is the third contract awarded this year to upgrade the Canadian’s 1950-era equipment. Cad Railways received a contract to upgrade 25 cars [see "VIA deal will refurbish cars for 'Canadian,'" Trains News Wire, April 11, 2018], while Bombardier is converting 17 cars to allow full accessibility [see "Bombardier to refurbish VIA cars to meet accessibility standards," Trains News Wire, April 4, 2018.
