MONTREAL — Genesee & Wyoming officials in Canada say they'll cease operations on the railroad conglomerate's Huron Central Railway by the end of 2018 for lack of financing.

In a news release issued this week, Genesee & Wyoming officials say that lack of funding from the Province of Ontario or the Canadian governments, carload declines, and regulatory compliance costs have combined to make the short line "economically unviable."

"We are obviously disappointed with this turn of events," Louis Gravel, President of Genesee & Wyoming Canada Inc., says in the news release. "We have done everything in our power to keep HCRY in operation, but both the provincial and federal governments have turned a deaf ear on the situation."

The announcement is a political football, now, for Ontario politicians. Candidates for the provincial parliament claim current leadership is to blame while one member of parliament says that Genesee & Wyoming had yet to come up with a 50-percent match for government funding, the Sault Star reports.
