LA POCATIERE, Quebec — VIA Rail Canada has awarded a $54 million contract to Bombardier Transportation to renovate 17 passenger cars to meet modern accessibility standards, the Canadian passsenger carrier announced Tuesday.

Each of the reconfigured 1950s-era cars, for use on long-haul routes in Canada, will be equipped with:

— Two wheelchair lifts;
— Two accessible spaces with anchoring devices;
— Announcement display screens, including displays in the restrooms;
— An accessible restroom.

Modifications will also include the installation of Wi-Fi equipment, upgrades to mechanical, electrical and heating components, and interior improvements.

The renovations are to be completed at Bombardier’s La Pocateire plant by 2020.
