A Minneapolis-area Northstar train arrives at St. Paul (Minn.) Union Depot in 2014. The commuter railroad will make a stop at the train station again for a special event and photo session with Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 No. 261.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the first time since it began service in 2009, a Northstar commuter train will provide revenue service to St. Paul, Minn. Commuter trains normally operate over 40 miles of BNSF Railway track between Big Lake, Minn., and downtown Minneapolis.

On Dec. 9 Northstar and BNSF will operate a special holiday service from Big Lake directly to Union Depot in St. Paul, bypassing the Minneapolis stop. The service will operate free of charge, with riders urged to take a non-perishable food item to benefit Neighborhood House, the depot’s charitable partner for the weekend. The holiday train is a first-come, first-served event.

Passengers will have two hours to participate in activities at Union Depot. There will be several events at the station including the popular outdoor European Christmas Market and the North Pole Express, pulled by Milwaukee Road Northern-type 4-8-4 No. 261.

While the train is at the station, a night photo session will be held. Photographers will be able to photograph the commuter train and Milwaukee Road No. 261. The session begins at 5:30 p.m. and concludes at 6:15 p.m. when the Northstar train departs. Cost of the photo session is $30 with the money going to benefit Neighborhood House.

The schedule for the Northstar train is as follows:

Depart Big Lake: 2:45 p.m.
Elk River: 2:55 p.m.
Ramsey: 3:01 p.m.
Anoka: 3:06 p.m.
