JEFFERSON, La. — On Dec. 16, the Louisiana Steam Train Association will put its steam locomotive, Southern Pacific No. 745, at the head of a rare Christmas excursion operating out of New Orleans.

The train will depart from the tracks on The Fly behind Audubon Park, and will take riders to Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World. Upon arrival, passengers will exit the train and enjoy a party where they will be served hot chocolate and watch holiday-themed movies. The train will pick up Santa Claus before heading back to The Fly.

"It’s a first of its kind Christmas train in the Crescent City pulled by an actual living, breathing, steam locomotive," steam association officials say in a news release. Seating is limited to 120 people at a fee of $125 per ticket. The train departs at 3 p.m and returns at 7 p.m. The price of the ticket includes an annual membership to the steam organization and an invitation to a members-only Christmas party on Dec. 17 at the organization's grounds.

No. 745 was built in 1921 by the Southern Pacific at its Algiers Shops near New Orleans. It sat on display at Audubon Park for many years until it was returned to service in 2004. The steam association operates the engine in its yard every few months, but excursions beyond the organization's property are rare.
