NEW ORLEANS — This October, the Louisiana Steam Train Association will present Steam Fest 2017 to celebrate the Crescent City's railroad heritage.

This year's Steamfest will take place Oct. 14 and 15.

The steam association owns and maintains the Southern Pacific No. 745. The locomotive has three extant sisters in Austin, San Antonio, and Grapevine, Texas, but is the only one of the quartet in operating condition. The association received public and private grants to restore it to operating condition in 2004. Festival attendees will be able to tour the locomotive's cab and blow the whistle.

“This is one of 11 of what we call New Orleans ladies. They were made in Algiers (Louisiana) by Southern Pacific in the 1920s from spare parts of engines that the government had from World War I. This is the only remaining one left and a magnificent piece of history. Steam Fest really brings the period to life,” Association President Bruce Brown said in a news release.

The event is free, but officials ask for a $15 per person donation.
