WASHINGTON — Rail projects looking to share in a $500 million grant opportunity have only a little more than a month before the U.S. Department of Transportation’s TIGER application window closes on Monday, Oct. 16.

The federal government is once again opening up the competitive grant program for transportation and infrastructure related projects. TIGER grants help project with significant impacts on a metropolitan area or region. Grants may not be less than $5 million or greater than $25 million, with the exception of rural projects that are eligible for grants as small as $1 million.

For the fiscal year 2017 grant series, the TIGER program will give special consideration to projects with improved access to reliable, safe, and affordable transportation in rural areas, such as projects that improve infrastructure, address public health and safety, promote regional connectivity, or help facilitate economic growth and competitiveness.

Since the program was first created, $5.1 billion has been awarded for capital investments in surface transportation and infrastructure projects during eight rounds of competitive grants.
