LUGOFF, S.C. — CSX Transportation is offering more money for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a freight train derailment in Lugoff in early August.

On Friday, railroad law enforcement officials said they are now offering $25,000 instead of the initial $5,000 award, reports Columbia, S.C., newspaper The State.

According to railroad and Kershaw County Sherriff’s deputies, a bulldozer was intentionally placed near the railroad’s right-of-way, causing a local freight train to derail two locomotives and 12 freight cars on early morning hours of Aug. 5.

No injuries were reported, but there was a brief threat of evacuations due to uncertainty with the freight train’s potentially hazardous consist.

While no hazardous materials were involved, there was a locomotive fuel tank leak of about 1,500 gallons.

The derailment occurred on the railroad’s former Seaboard Air Line S-Line between Hamlet, N.C., and Columbia, S.C. The route is served by Amtrak’s Silver Star.
