BEIJING — A new fleet of high-speed passenger trains have entered service on the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway, Xinhua News Agency reports.

And they might just be the world’s fastest trains.

Beginning Sept. 21, the bullet trains will start operating between Beijing and Shanghai with seven round-trip trains daily between the two cities. The new bullet trains will slash travel times from 5 hours to closer to 4.5 hours.

While the Chinese Rejuvenation bullet trains can operate at speeds up to 217 mph, the Chinese news source says they are capable of speeds up to 249 mph.

Current trains have maximum speeds of only 186 mph, reports science new website LiveScience.
