BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — Every locomotive on the Iowa Interstate Railroad has been equipped with Wi-Tronix’s cloud-based Violet technology stem, the tech company recently announced.

The on-board technology is a streaming event recorder and video resource that railroads use to mange their locomotive fleets in real-time. Iowa Interstate managers can tap into the Wi-Tronix website and monitor locomotive activities using event recorders, digital video recorders, locomotive data systems, and crash-hardened memory modules. The Violet system is also compatible with positive train control systems.

The streaming software and other data can be retrieved from computers and any other mobile device with access to Wi-Tronix cloud-based system.

Railroad managers can quickly determine train speed, GPS location, throttle position, and other information while trains are in operation.

In addition to deploying the technology on its entire locomotive fleet, the regional railroad was also able to complete geo-mapping surveys of its mileposts using video data. The Violet technology was able to record mileposts along the right-of-way that were then compiled into an automated survey and database of all mileposts.

“We truly appreciate Wi-Tronix in the way they listened to what we needed and got it done,” says Joe Parsons, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Iowa Interstate.

“They are a true partner, which is refreshing as that is an extremely uncommon attribute for most vendors,” adds Parsons.

Wi-Tronix, an Illinois based company, supplies the rail industry with a variety of onboard technologies aimed at safety, security, and operational efficiency.
