PITTSBURGH — The Port Authority of Allegheny County, the operators of Pittsburgh’s rail transit system, have announced plans to open a larger, more modern customer service center in downtown Pittsburgh.

The agency’s leadership has approved a decision to amend the existing lease at the Heinz 56 Center on Smithfield Street to include a new 8,500-square-foot facility. The authority has housed its administrative offices at the building’s third and fifth floors since 2000.

The new service center, which will be located less than a block away from the current location, will include a modernized lobby, digital screeners with real-time transit information, a lost-and-found office, additional customer service windows, Americans with Disabilities Act-accessibility upgrades, and other amenities.

Authority officials say more than 500,000 people use the downtown service center each year to buy fares and transit passes, and to receive timetable information.

The new customer service center will open sometime in 2018.
