SAN FRANCISCO — Caltrain’s leadership has approved a $32.1-million contract to an Oakland, Calif.,-based engineering firm to replace the existing South San Francisco station with a new center boarding platform connecting to a pedestrian overpass.

The project will involve track and signal work, the construction of a new 700-foot center board platform, and other modern amenities. The improvements and new access will also connect to a pedestrian underpass from the station platform to Grand Avenue and Poletti Drive in South San Francisco.

The $61-million project aims to improve connectivity and safety and will result in the facility’s full compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Work is scheduled to start in November 2017 and is expected to be complete by summer 2019.
