CHICAGO — Declining ticket sales at the Stone Avenue station ticket office will result in the facility’s de-staffing next month, Metra officials recently announced. The railroad will no longer staff the LaGrange, Ill., station after Aug. 4.

Located along the BNSF Line, the Stone Avenue station has seen steady declines in on-site ticket sales with more passengers opting to use online and mobile purchasing options. In May, customers at the station purchased only 1,391 tickets for the entire month — the second lowest number of tickets sold at all 13 stations staffed along Metra’s BNSF Line to Aurora, Ill.

The position is being eliminated through attrition and will not result in any job loss.

This isn’t the first time Metra has decided to de-staff its stations. Ticket agents have been eliminated at the River and Brookfield stations on the BNSF Line and several other locations on the Rock Island Line, Milwaukee West Line, Electric Line, and other territories.

While the facility will stay open, passengers will have to purchase fares either online or through the railroad’s mobile app.
