RICHMOND, Va. — The Commonwealth Transportation Board has approved an improvement program for the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation that allocates $18.6 billion for rail and other transportation projects over the next six years.

The plan specifically allocates $3.4 billion to rail and public transportation, including $817 million in rail-related initiatives and $2.6 billion in public transportation projects.

The Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s annual budget for fiscal year 2018 is $689 million. Its funds will go toward a variety of grant recipients including public transit providers, local and regional government entities, freight railroads, and Amtrak. More than 50 percent of the funds will be earmarked for capital improvement projects in the most recent budget.

Specifically, the agency will spend $429 million on public transportation projects, $207.3 million on passenger and freight rail programs, $1.6 million on rail industrial access initiatives, and $7.8 million on rail preservation programs.

Additional money is set aside for commuter assistance programs, the agency’s operating budget, and regulatory and safety programs, among other initiatives.
