Amtrak to build out locomotive shops in Seattle

SEATTLE — Amtrak announced this week that it will build a new 31,000-square-foot locomotive shop in Seattle. The new shop will provides services for two long-distance trains, the Empire Builder and Coast Starlight; Amtrak Cascades and Sound Transit Sounder trains.

Amtrak’s current yard in Seattle will be reconfigured to allow better access to the new facility, which will be equipped with a new 125-ton drop table, funded by the Washington State Department of Transportation and a 55-ton overhead bridge crane.

Construction is set to begin this month and be completed by 2019.
