Beyond East Ely

ELY, Nev. — The Nevada Northern Railway is celebrating its 30th anniversary on Memorial Day weekend with a series of special events beginning May 26 to 29.

The weekend will include steam-powered train rides, guided tours of the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark, a western-themed staged train robbery, and dining options.

In addition to the events in Ely, the railroad has launched a social media campaign online at Facebook in which it will give away prizes for the next 30 days. The giveaways include the chance to win the railroad’s widely popular "Be the Engineer" package and other family-oriented activities. The online campaign started on May 19.

The Nevada Northern Railway is a former copper-hauling freight railroad that has been preserved as a national landmark and tourist railroad. The railroad operates 2-8-0 and 4-6-0 steam locomotives. Some of the motive power and rolling stock has never left the railroad's property.

More information is available online and via the railroad's Facebook page.
