Adaptable Carriage features a novel forward-folding seat design that allows any litter left on seats to be tipped onto the floor for easier cleaning after the seats have been stowed.
42 Technology
CAMBRIDGE, England — An innovative new system to stow seats within passenger coaches to create space for cargo is being offered for trials by passenger railroads, Cambridge-based technology and product innovation consultants 42 Technology claims its Adaptable Carriage system allows operators to configure specific coaches to carry passengers or low density, high-value cargo.

Adaptable Carriage features a forward-folding seat design that allows any litter left on seats to be tipped onto the floor for easier cleaning after the seats have been stowed; and a sliding mechanism to configure the seats into a seated position and to lock them in position along the coach.

The technology can be retrofitted into existing coaches or integrated into new-build designs. It is ready for use in its first industrial trials. The technology is fully compatible with both steel-frame and modern aluminum coach designs using cantilevered seats. The system took two years to develop.

42 Technology has developed a working demonstration module that was launched to the wider rail industry community at this year’s international Railtex exhibition in Birmingham, England.
