SEATTLE — Sound Transit managers have approved an order for 30 additional light rail vehicles from Siemens. The new vehicles will be used on the agency’s Link extension to Federal Way and downtown Redmond, Wash., opening in 2024.

The newest order of light rail vehicles will include several improvements to on-board systems and passenger amenities, including larger windows, extra standing room, more space under the seats, and four bicycle hooks. They will have a capacity of 74 seats. The vehicles will be built at Siemens’ Sacrament, Calif., production site.

The new vehicles will be purchased through the voter-approved Sound Transit 3 tax measure. The plan included funding to purchase additional light rail vehicles. The cars will arrive at Sound Transit no later than 18 months after the final delivery of an existing order for light rail equipment placed last fall.

Sound Transit currently operates 62 light rail vehicles in its fleet.
