NEW YORK — A record breaking 87 million people rode Metro-North in 2016, the Daily Freeman reports. Most of the rides were on the railroad’s services east of the Hudson River, including the Harlem, Hudson, and New Haven lines. More than 84 million people rode those trains.

Ridership decreased on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines by 3.5 percent.

“The ridership increases in general were largely due to a strong regional economy, substantial improvements to service reliability and high customer satisfaction,” says Michael Shiffer, Metro-North vice president for planning.
