SAN FRANCISCO — A California Congresswoman is calling on President Donald Trump to release $647 million in Federal Transit Administration funds to electrify Caltrain, SF Bay News reports.

The previously promised funds have been held up since February, even after Caltrain and FTA officials worked to ensure that the electrification project met all federal requirements. The modernization project is expected to cost about $2 billion. U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier says holding up the funds not only affects the Bay Area but it’s putting thousands of jobs across the country at risk.

“The President keeps saying ‘Make America great again,’ but the president’s proposal would really make America stop,” Speier says.

The Caltrain electrification project has been in the works for more than two decades.
