CHICAGO — GE Transportation has signed its first European contract to equip non-GE locomotives with new locomotive technology. The company is working with DB Cargo, Europe’s largest freight railroad, to equip 250 locomotives with the company’s RailConnect 360 Asset Performance technology.

The deal follows a three-month pilot period in which the company’s on-board technology was able to deliver a 25 percent reduction in service failures.

The technology uses onboard analytics to monitor locomotive performance across extended periods. The service provides railroads with information on locomotive velocity, fuel usage, productivity, and dwell times.
