SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Siemens has partnered with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority to replace the agency’s 27-year-old light rail electrification system.

Siemens will install new traction power substations, new communication devices, and other modern equipment to increase the reliability of the system and minimize stress on the system. The new system will give rail equipment and its supporting infrastructure a longer life cycle.

The company will be responsible for the entire project from design and production to final commissioning. It is the first time Siemens has served as the prime contractor for the agency.

The new system should go into service in November 2017.
