CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Union Pacific’s flagship steam locomotive, 4-8-4 No. 844, will travel to Boise, Idaho, between April 18 and April 28.

The outgoing trip will see the locomotive travel to Rock Springs, Wyo.; Pocatello, Idaho; and Gooding, Idaho before arriving on Boise. It will be on display in Pocatello for a full day on April 20 and in Boise for April 23.

On the return, the locomotive and train will take a different return route that sees it on public display in Ogden, Utah, on April 23. The 844 will return to Cheyenne on April 28.

The Boise excursion will be the 844’s third since undergoing an extensive overhaul between 2013 and 2016. No. 844 was built in 1944, and is the only steam locomotive in North America that has never been taken off of its parent railroad’s active service roster.
