PHOENIX — Valley Metro’s Northwest Extension project has been selected by the Associated General Contractors of America as the recipient of the 2017 Alliant Build America Award in the highway and transportation category.

The award recognizes the agency’s efforts in relocating major utility systems in already loaded city streets, while still maintaining utility access to neighborhoods, businesses, and schools. The agency’s light rail project prompted construction crews to relocate existing utility alignments to accommodate the new public transit system.

Valley Metro also received a partnership award from the same association for its collaboration with other construction companies and public entities throughout the project.

The 3.2-mile extension provides light rail service to the Montebello and Dunlap Avenue areas of northwest Phoenix. Phase I of the project began service in March 2016.
