STETTLER, Alberta — In honor of Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017, the Alberta Prairie Railway, the Alberta Railway Museum, and Rails and Tales 2017 is planning a celebration of the history of steam rail transport in Canada. “Rails and Tales 2017” is a partnership between non-profits and business to commemorate Canada’s Railways and their influence on Canadian history and development. It will be hosted in Stettler and Big Valley, Alta., from June 28 to July 5.

The event will feature two operating steam locomotives: Alberta Prairie Railway 1920 Baldwin 2-8-0 No. 41 (ex-Mississippian Railway No. 77) and Alberta Railway Museum’s ex-Canadian National 4-6-0 No. 1392, built in 1913 at the Montreal Locomotive Works. The Rocky Mountain Rail Society’s 4-8-2 No. 6060, built in 1944 by Montreal Locomotive Works for Canadian National, will be on static display.

The steam locomotives will operate under the direction of Alberta Prairie Railway and provide trips from Stettler to Big Valley. Several different trips are planned over eight days including double-headed steam trips, lunch and dinner runs, a morning cruise with breakfast, and a leisure trip pausing at historic sites along the line. Both locomotives will be featured on round-trip excursions each day.

In conjunction with the Alberta Prairie Railway trips, Rails and Tales will be presenting an eight-day exposition demonstrating how Canadian railways influenced the culture and development of the country. It will include themes celebrating different sectors of Canadian society. This will include Metis Culture, Railway History, Pioneer Days and a Canada Day Celebration.

Tickets will be available in mid-February by contacting Alberta Prairie Railway at 403-742-2811.
