STB announces 1.6-percent increase for civil violation fines

WASHINGTON — Civil penalties for violating Surface Transportation Board regulations have been increased 1.6 percent for 2017, the agency announced Tuesday.

The board is required to adjust its penalty schedule for inflation each year.

For example, rail carriers that knowingly violate an STB order may be assessed $7,635 per day, up from $7,512 in 2016.

Carriers may be assessed up to $763 per day after 30 days if it “cannot transport the traffic offered to it in a manner that properly serves the public.” Violations include improper handling or routing of traffic, joint use of facilities, and embargoes.
