OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific and the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad are working together to speed up delivery of inbound fertilizers and outbound grains to farmers in South Dakota.
UP’s GroTrain recently started serving the South Dakota market through its connection with the Genesee & Wyoming-owned short line railroad. According to a railroad news release, agricultural products are now being shipped directly between the two railroads at UP’s Mankato, Minn., rail yard.
Prior to the new arrangements, grain and other related products were using a third railroad to gain access to South Dakota farmers.
There are a total of eight cooperatives and growers served by the short line railroad in South Dakota.
