PHOENIX — Valley Metro and the city of Mesa, Ariz., will host a community fall festival Oct. 15 and 16 to celebrate the start of construction on the 1.9-mile Gilbert Road light rail extension in Mesa. The new rail line will expand light rail service on Main Street from Mesa Drive to Gilbert Road.

Transit officials initiated the Gilbert Road extension study in 2011, which was followed by an environmental review in 2012. In April 2013, the agency and local city leaders adopted a preferred design option and a final design team finished all plans in August 2015. The line is on schedule to open in late 2018 or early 2019.

This weekend’s kick-off event will feature family activities, local food, and musical entertainment to celebrate the start of construction.
