NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Southern is donating $50,000 to the American Red Cross to help residents in five Southeastern states as recover from Hurricane Matthew. More than 13,000 people have sought shelter from the Red Cross in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia following the storm.

"Many of our Norfolk Southern employees and facilities are located in these affected areas, and Red Cross recovery efforts are timely, effective, and vital," says James A. Squires, NS chairman, president, and CEO. "We want our employees, customers, and community neighbors to know that Norfolk Southern is there to help where it's needed most."

While NS operations have for the most part returned to normal in those five states, many of the communities the railroad serves are still dealing with the fallout of the massive storm.

NS operates more than 5,000 route miles in the affected states and has 9,500 employees in that region.
