LONGVIEW, Texas – The latest switching locomotive to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 compliance, Railserve’s DUAL LEAF, rolled out of the builder’s Longview facility in late August.

RSSX No. 1000 is powered by two Cummins QSX15 engines like its Tier 3 predecessors, but its 600-horsepower gensets meet stricter EPA environmental regulations required in 2017.

The yellow 4-axle unit, now undergoing testing, is most easily be distinguished by the absence of a muffler on the exhaust stack. Tier 3 versions, introduced in 2012 and already in service on two continents, have mufflers atop the long hood, but the muffler’s functionality is incorporated into the Cummins Tier 4 package. More than 50 single and dual-genset LEAFs are in operation since Railserve introduced its first switcher in 2010.

Railserve joins the ranks of Brookville Equipment Corp. and National Railway Equipment Co. in offering a Tier 4-compliant switcher. Brookville’s BL12CG was introduced in April 2015, followed by NRE’s NREX four months later.
