OMAHA, Neb. — An organization comprised of railroads, shippers, manufacturers, and logistics companies has named Union Pacific as railroad of the year. The Railway Industrial Clearance Association recognized the railroad based on peer votes in areas of technology and customer service.

UP says it received the honor largely due to the creation of new technology software called iClear that was created by PS Technology, a subsidiary of the railroad. The iClear program allows users to validate railroad routes for oversized loads without waiting for officials to manually check route clearances.

The software uses 3D modeling to create loaded rail car geometry and route information to check for any obstructions. The software then automatically selects viable routes produces maps for acceptable meet-pass locations.

The software was initially created by Union Pacific, but is now available commercially.
