KIRKWOOD, Mo. – Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is expected to visit the Kirkwood Amtrak station at 10 a.m. today to announce his state’s application for federal high speed rail funds, according to a statement from his office.

The application covers a two-phase proposal for rail travel between St. Louis and Kansas City: immediate upgrades to improve speeds along existing Union Pacific-owned rail lines used by Amtrak’s state-supported Missouri River Runner; and longer-term planning, engineering, and preparation for construction of a separate, dedicated, high speed line between the two cities.
