California


For a different train ride, try the El Dorado Western Railroad. A program of the El Dorado County Historical Museum, the railroad takes you on 30-minute round trips over The Placerville Branch of the Southern Pacific. Rides aboard historic gang cars operate out of El Dorado and Shingle Springs. museum.edcgov.us/el-dorado-western-railroad


Enjoy the scenery of Gold Country aboard the Placerville and Sacramento Valley Railroad in Sacramento. Rides vary in length from short demonstrations to 2-hour excursions aboard motorcars and other equipment. psvrr.org


The Napa Valley Wine Train has joined with Castello di Amorosa to offer guests a special event. As the train travels to Napa Valley, passengers enjoy a three-course meal. Then, they can tour Castello di Amorosa, which is styled after a 13th century Tuscan castle winery, and sample the castle’s wines. winetrain.com


Colorado


The Grand Canyon Railway is operating former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 2-8-2 No. 4960 on the first Saturday of every month through September 7. The 1923 Baldwin will pull trains on the 65-mile route from Williams to the Grand Canyon. the train.com


Florida


Summer excursions on Tavares, Eustis & Gulf Railroad will be pulled by diesel locomotive 33. Steam engine No. 2, a wood-burning 2-6-0, will be taken out of service and returned to Arkansas for its 15-year rebuild. Iowa

Minneapolis & St Louis No. 457
Get an up-close look at M&StL No. 457, a consolidation-type steam locomotive built in 1912, which has been in East Park since 1959. Cab tours are available on summer weekends. June 29 is Cannonball Day, which features fun activities, food, and music.

Maine


The boarding platform and parking for Downeast Scenic is adjacent to the Maine Community Foundation at 245 Main Street in Ellsworth. downeastscenicrail.org

 

Maine Eastern will run excursions on select days from June 26 through August 16, with limited seating Its regular season begins August 21 and runs through October 12. During the regular season, Wednesday through Sunday, trains will depart Brunswick at 10 a.m. and arrive in Rockland at 11:55 a.m., with the 56-mile return trip to Brunswick departing Rockland at 3 p.m. maineeasternrailroad.com


Michigan


Little River Railroad will operate three special excursions this season. The Hillsdale Flyer will run on August 25, September 22, and November 3. The 50-mile round trip will operate over the Indiana Northeastern Railroad between Coldwater and Hillsdale. littleriverrailroad.com

New York


Adirondack Scenic Railroad has extended service on several of its trains. Lunch excursions leaving Thendara or Utica will now travel 5 miles past Carter to the station in Big Moose, where lunch is served. adirondackrr.com


Pennsylvania


Steam into History, a new tourist railroad, plans to run excursions Tuesdays through Sundays this summer between New Freedom and Hanover Junction. The railroad’s steam train will be headed by a newly constructed replica 4-4-0 and help convey the role York County played during the Civil War. Texas


The Houston Railroad Museum is in the process of relocating and is closed until it finds a new home. houstonrrmuseum.org

 

Texas & Pacific Railway Museum

A historic Texas & Pacific depot, built in 1912, houses the museum and an Amtrak station. The museum contains artifacts and photos dating from the 1870s and a replica of an agent’s office. The balcony on the depot’s upper level offers a panoramic view of the area. A Union Pacific caboose is also on the grounds. The Texas & Pacific Railway Museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays.


British Columbia


The Spirit of Kamloops has ceased operation for the 2013 season as locomotive 2141 is undergoing a mechanical overhaul. kamrail.com
