The COG Railway: A Trip to the Moon

A Trip to the moon

The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway, is open for its 149th season, running daily through December 2nd. The historic railway, now the only operating cog railway in the US, is considered a must-do adventure for visitors to New England. The trip takes about an hour to make it to the summit. The knowledgeable brakemen give a guided tour on the ride up, leaving guests at the top with an hour to enjoy the expansive views and summit activities. The return voyage is just under an hour. Once at the base, there is a giftshop, restaurant and interactive cog railway museum to visit.

Offering views of up to 5 states and into Canada, the Mount Washington Cog Railway primarily runs biodiesel locomotives, with a fleet of 7 biodiesels made right on site.

Starting Memorial Day Weekend, the Cog will be firing up its vintage steam trains. The railway will be running a steam engine as the first train up the mountain throughout most of the season and an additional afternoon steam trip in July and August. Every day throughout the season, riders can save $15 off a ticket on the last train of the day. The details on the train schedule, special offerings and discounts can be found online.

Lilacs adorn the tracks of the Mount Washington Cog Railway during the summer months of train operations.

This season, the Cog will be host once again to several annual events such as the NH Handcrafted Festival on July 14th and 15th, Steampunk Fest on August 18th, and Holiday Family Weekend on Thanksgiving weekend.

Mount Washington 9, Waumbek, the oldest steam train operating in the fleet, voyages up to the summit of Mount Washington. Two steam trains operate each day during the summer months.

The Handcrafted in NH Festival features many fine granite-state products produced by local New Hampshire artisans. Craftsmen will also host live demonstrations such as jewelry making and wood carving throughout the day on the green at Marshfield Base Station.

On Saturday, August 18th, The Cog will host its 3rd annual “Railway to the Moon” Steampunk Festival. Steampunk is a melding of the Victorian age fused with modern technology in a Wild Wild West style. The festival will feature live steam art presentations, a steampunk fashion contest with prizes, book signings with steampunk Author Kyle Newton and White Mountain Author Dan Szczesny, kids Bubbles and Gadgets tent and more. The day will culminate in a round trip afternoon steam train ride to the summit. Event admission is free, tickets for the “Railway To The Moon train Ride” can be purchased at thecog.com.

On Holiday Family Weekend, The Cog is visited by Santa, Mrs Claus and their helpers.

The whole Christmas Crew rides the train to Waumbek station for a polar experience, about ¾ up the mountain to the wintry halfway point. Here passengers get treated to a special gift on the train (sorry parents, kids only) beautiful views, and hot cocoa and donuts in the warming hut. On return to the base, guests can play family games, chidren can mail their wishlist to Santa and make an ornament to take home and listen to a reading of “The Little Engine That Could.”
