Maximum-power position on the throttle.

Embargo
An order issue by a common carrier or public regulatory agency that prohibits the acceptance of some or all kinds of freight for transportation on the carrier's lines or between specified points or areas, because of traffic congestion, labor difficulties, or other reasons.
EMD 567
Designation for the two-cycle engine used by Electro-Motive from 1938 to 1966. Its 8 ½-inch bore and 10-inch stroke give it a cylinder displacement of 567 cubic inches. (Area = ?r2. Radius is 4.25 inches; the square of the radius is 18.06; times ? [3.14] is 56.7; that times the 10-inch stroke is 567 cubic inches.)
EMD 645
Designation of the engine introduced by EMD in 1965. The cylinder bore is 9 1/16 inches and the stroke is 10 inches, giving a cylinder displacement of 645 cubic inches.
EMD 710
Designation of the engine EMD introduced in 1984. It has the same 9-1/6-inch bore as the 645 engine , but the stroke is lengthened to 11 inches. Cylinder displacement is 709.5 cubic inches.
End-of-train device (EOT)
The modern end-of-train marker, placed on the rear coupler of a train to monitor air-brake system integrity and air pressure. Another acronym used to refer to these types of markers is FRED (Flashing Rear-End Device).
Engine
A unit or combination of units propelled by any form of energy and operated from a single control for use in train or yard service. Can also be used to refer to cab control cars when leading a commuter train. Also, in a steam locomotive, the combination of cylinders, rods and driving wheels.
Engineer
Individual responsible for the actual movement of a train.
EOT device.

Equipment trust
Financial arrangement used by railroads to pay for locomotives and rolling stock, similar to the way many individuals pay for motor vehicles. A financial institution provides the capital for an equipment purchase, and retains actual ownership of the equipment until the railroad has paid off the loan.

"Formerly" or "formerly belonging to".
Exempt railroad crossing
When placed at grade crossings, an "Exempt" sign means that highway vehicles which are normally required by law to stop at railroad crossings-such as buses and trucks hauling certain materials-are exempt from the requirement to stop at that crossing.
Exhaust stroke
The fourth piston stroke in a four-cycle diesel engine. The exhaust valves are held open and the burned gases are driven out of the cylinder by the ascending piston.
Export model
A locomotive designed and built for railroads outside North America, where clearances may be more restricted, rail and bridges may not be as strong, and gauges may be other than 4 feet 8 ½ inches. A few export units have found employment in North America, most notably on National Railways of Mexico.
Extended-range dynamic braking
An optional high-amperage system that allows dynamic braking down to lower speeds than the standard system (below 15 mph).
Extra board
Pool of employees not assigned to regular runs.
